Machine-made shoes typically use a cemented (glued) construction. The upper and sole are bonded with adhesive under pressure. This is fast, cheap, and perfectly adequate for casual footwear. But when the glue eventually fails — and it will — the shoe cannot be resoled economically. It's discarded.
Handmade shoes use welt construction — most commonly the Goodyear Welt or Blake stitch. The sole is stitched to the upper through a strip of leather (the welt). In handmade production, lasts are carefully designed and refined over time to create a fit that conforms naturally to the foot's anatomy.
The result: a handmade shoe not only fits better from the start but moulds progressively to the wearer's foot over time, creating a bespoke-like fit that improves with wear.
4. Finishing: Detail That Goes Beyond the Surface
Hand-finishing is visible in the details: burnished edges, hand-painted welts, individually set eyelets, and a polish applied by hand rather than sprayed on.
